What is a Black Screen?
A black screen displays pure black (#000000) across your entire monitor. On OLED displays, this means pixels are completely off, producing true black. On LCD screens, you'll see how well the backlight is blocked โ revealing any light bleed issues.
Our black screen tool is perfect for testing display quality, saving energy on OLED devices, or simply darkening your screen in low-light environments.
What Can You Use It For?
๐ฅ๏ธ OLED Testing
Check if your OLED display has any defective pixels that glow when they should be completely off. True black means true off on OLED.
๐ก Backlight Bleed Detection
On LCD monitors, a black screen reveals backlight bleed โ light leaking around the edges. Important to check on new monitors.
๐ Dead Pixel Detection
Stuck pixels often show up as tiny coloured dots on a black background. Combine with our white screen test for complete coverage.
๐ Energy Saving (OLED)
On OLED screens, black pixels use zero power. Use a black screen as a "soft off" to save battery while keeping your device awake.
๐ Dark Room Use
Need your screen on but don't want it lighting up the room? A black screen minimises light output while keeping your device active.
๐งน Dust Visibility
Light-coloured dust particles show up clearly against a black background, helping you spot debris on your screen for cleaning.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between black on LCD vs OLED?
On LCD screens, "black" is the backlight being blocked โ some light still comes through, so blacks appear dark grey. On OLED, each pixel produces its own light, so black means the pixel is completely off, producing perfect, true black.
Is a black screen safe for long-term use?
Yes, black screens are safe for any display type. On OLED screens, static black is actually the gentlest thing you can display since pixels are off. Unlike bright static images, black won't cause burn-in.
Why do I see grey or light patches on a black screen?
On LCD monitors, this is called backlight bleed or IPS glow. Some amount is normal, especially in corners. Excessive bleed may indicate a defect worth returning the monitor for.
Does a black screen save battery?
On OLED: Yes, significantly โ black pixels are off. On LCD: Minimal savings โ the backlight stays on regardless of what's displayed. The colour on screen barely affects LCD power consumption.
